Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is essential for red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis, and nerve function. The body cannot make it, so it has to come from diet or supplements.
GWAS work has identified variants near FUT2 and TCN2 that influence circulating vitamin B12 levels, partly through gut absorption and binding-protein activity.
This result reflects research-level variation in B12 handling and is not a serum B12 test or a supplement recommendation.
Diet (especially in vegetarians and vegans), GI conditions, age, and medications such as metformin and acid blockers strongly affect real B12 status.
