Photic sneeze reflex

Touch & Pain

Photic sneeze reflex (autosomal dominant compelling helio-ophthalmic outburst, or ACHOO) describes sneezing in response to bright light.

GWAS work has identified a variant near the ZEB2 gene linked to the trait, which affects an estimated 18-35 percent of people.

This result reflects research-level variation in this reflex and is not a clinical evaluation.

Light intensity and abrupt light exposure are the main triggers in real life.

DNA Genics reports genotypes based on the 'positive' strand of the human genome reference sequence (build 37/HG19). Other companies may use the opposite strand, so genotypes may need conversion for comparison.
