Story

The narrative of this ancient life

Overview

Late Bronze Age Spain (c. 1300–800 BCE) encompasses a time when Iberian communities expressed their identities through regional Bronze Age styles while remaining connected to broader exchange networks. Archaeology emphasizes the interplay of local settlement lifeways with the movement of metals, objects, and technological knowledge.

Region & Environment

Across much of Iberia, Bronze Age lifeways were shaped by Mediterranean climates with seasonal rainfall and productive agricultural zones. Coastal and riverine landscapes facilitated transport, while inland areas could provide access to mineral resources, supporting craft production and trade.

Historical Context

This period follows earlier Bronze Age phases and leads into the Iron Age. Archaeological sequences suggest changing political and economic organization, including shifts in where people lived and how valued goods were produced and circulated. Rather than a single uniform “Iberian” state, the Late Bronze Age is characterized by multiple regional traditions.

Populations & Lifeways

Settlements range from small villages to more defensible communities in some areas. Agricultural production and herding likely remained central, with craft specialization—particularly in metalworking—playing an important role in local economies. Access to prestigious objects may have been uneven, as implied by artifact distributions in domestic and funerary contexts.

Archaeology & Material Culture

Material culture is strongly visible in bronze artifacts (tools and personal ornaments), ceramic assemblages, and standardized forms that vary by region. Comparison of vessel shapes, metal styles, and associated contexts helps archaeologists define regional groupings and track connections across Iberia and beyond. Hoards and burial assemblages (where documented) further show how communities valued and managed objects.

Culture & Society

The Atlantic Bronze Complex label points to shared material traditions along western European routes, but Iberia also shows local adaptations. Together, styles of metalwork, ceramics, and burial practice indicate that social identities were expressed through shared formats while communities maintained regional differences.

Legacy & Transition

As the Late Bronze Age waned, archaeological patterns increasingly foreshadow Iron Age developments in technology, settlement, and social organization. Continued movement of goods and ideas helped create the conditions for later transformations in Iberia’s cultural landscape.

Genetics

These comparisons show genetic similarity, not identity or origin. The populations listed are those whose genomes show statistical alignment to this ancient individual.

Similarity reflects shared history, not shared identity. These are analytical comparisons, not claims about who this person was.

Modern Genetic Admixture

This analysis compares the DNA profile with present-day reference populations, showing statistical similarity to modern reference populations from different regions. The excavation site records where this individual was found, not a fixed modern genetic identity.

Closest Modern Populations

These are the modern populations showing the closest statistical alignment to A man buried in Spain in the Late Bronze Age era, ranked by genetic distance. Lower distance values indicate closer statistical similarity. Cross-region similarity can reflect shared ancestry, population movement, continuity, or later admixture.

Genomic transformation and social organization during the Copper Age-Bronze Age transition in southern Iberia

Authors Villalba-Mouco V, Oliart C, Rihuete-Herrada C, Childebayeva A, Rohrlach AB et al.
Abstract

The emerging Bronze Age (BA) of southeastern Iberia saw marked social changes. Late Copper Age (CA) settlements were abandoned in favor of hilltop sites, and collective graves were largely replaced by single or double burials with often distinctive grave goods indirectly reflecting a hierarchical social organization, as exemplified by the BA El Argar group. We explored this transition from a genomic viewpoint by tripling the amount of data available for this period. Concomitant with the rise of El Argar starting ~2200 cal BCE, we observe a complete turnover of Y-chromosome lineages along with the arrival of steppe-related ancestry. This pattern is consistent with a founder effect in male lineages, supported by our finding that males shared more relatives at sites than females. However, simple two-source models do not find support in some El Argar groups, suggesting additional genetic contributions from the Mediterranean that could predate the BA.
