Ordovices and north Wales communities
Ordovices (Latinized form; local self-designations are not preserved)
Roman sources place the Ordovices in northwestern Wales and describe campaigns against them. Hillforts, farms, ritual deposits, and later Segontium provide a broader archaeological context that does not depend on accepting Roman categories as complete local identities.
Geografía histórica, escala comunitaria y transformación posterior
Geografía histórica
The Ordovices are conventionally associated with northwestern Wales. Segontium and Anglesey help orient the Roman-contact story, but neither supplies an ancient boundary or capital.
Organización política y escala comunitaria
Roman texts describe collective warfare but do not preserve a political constitution. North Wales archaeology shows many hillfort, farmstead, and ritual communities; Segontium represents later military control, not an Ordovician government.
Transformación de época romana y recepción posterior
Segontium remained active into the late fourth century. A fifth- or sixth-century inscription later reused the Ordovician name, but that isolated evidence cannot establish unchanged group identity or modern descent.
A Roman military site connected with conquest narratives, explicitly not an Ordovician capital.
Ordovices is known through external sources and cannot be mapped directly onto every archaeological community.
Material evidence supplies local histories that literary campaign narratives omit.

-
Roman accounts associate the Ordovices with Caratacus
The campaign story is attributed to Tacitus and should not be expanded into an unsupported political map.
-
Agricola’s campaign and Segontium’s foundation
Cadw links the fort’s establishment to Roman operations against communities called Ordovices.

Familia lingüística: Brittonic Celtic context and Latin
North Wales contained diverse hillforts, enclosed farms, and ritual sites rather than one documented settlement system.
Llyn Cerrig Bach and newer Anglesey finds show long-lived deposition practices whose relationship to Roman stories remains debated.
Segontium’s garrison and roads document occupation and mobility, not the replacement of every rural community.
A named people, coin distribution, object style, language inference, or Roman administrative unit cannot by itself establish a fixed ethnic identity or territorial population.
