Aedui
Aedui
The Aedui were an influential community of east-central Gaul centered in the late Iron Age on Bibracte. Archaeology documents an oppidum of craft, exchange, and assembly, while Caesar describes diplomacy, internal factions, and an alliance with Rome from a Roman viewpoint.
Geografia histórica, organização política e história posterior
Geografia histórica
Aeduan communities occupied parts of present-day Burgundy between major river corridors. Bibracte on Mont Beuvray was a late Iron Age political and economic center, not a precise marker for all Aeduan territory.
Organização política
Aeduan public life included magistrates, aristocratic competition, councils, and assemblies. Caesar’s terminology is informative but filtered through Roman constitutional analogies and the pressures of war.
Transição da época romana e legado posterior
Bibracte was largely left for Augustodunum, modern Autun, around the turn of the era. Aeduan institutions were recast inside the Roman civitas system rather than ending in a single moment.
The site’s scale is archaeological; proposed resident totals are estimates and are not treated here as exact census figures.
Workshops, coins, and imported goods show activity at Bibracte without defining a uniform Aeduan culture.
Caesar’s diplomatic labels are attributed to his narrative and read as political claims rather than neutral constitutional facts.

Bibracte’s workshops, imports, fortifications, and public spaces support interpretation as an important oppidum.
The title 'brothers and kinsmen of the Roman people' is Roman diplomatic language reported in literary evidence, not proof of equal power.
Internal disagreements recorded during the Gallic War warn against describing the Aedui as politically unanimous.
Material styles and language evidence can show contact, practice, and change, but they do not by themselves prove a single ethnic identity. Greek and Roman descriptions are identified as testimony from interested authors.
