Norse Greenland within Kujataa
Qassiarsuk; Brattahlíð is the Old Norse site-name used in later texts
Norse farmer-hunters established communities in southern Greenland from the late tenth century and maintained Atlantic and Arctic connections for centuries. Their farms and churches now form one historical layer within Kujataa, a living Kalaallit farming landscape safeguarded by Greenlandic institutions.
Geografia histórica, organização social e mudanças ligadas
Geografia histórica e redes
Norse farms occupied selected fjord environments in southern and western Greenland while different Arctic peoples lived in other regions and periods; the island was never reducible to a Norse colony.
Organização política e social
Norse Greenland contained farms, assemblies, elites, and later church institutions linked with Iceland and Norway. These structures did not govern all Greenland, and no medieval Norse authority represents modern Kalaallit communities.
Transformação posterior e recepção moderna
Qassiarsuk and Kujataa are living Kalaallit places under Greenlandic stewardship. Heritage interpretation must center modern residents and keep Norse ruins distinct from claims about Kalaallit identity or descent.
UNESCO recognition includes distinct historical layers and present Greenlandic land use.
The marker identifies one site within Kujataa, not a claim over Greenlandic territory or sovereignty.
Modern Kalaallit institutions and residents must remain centered in interpretation.

Farming depended on hay, livestock, hunting, and maritime access within subarctic ecological limits.
Churches and elite farms document hierarchy and Atlantic institutions, not an egalitarian frontier society.
The causes and timing of the end of Norse settlement remain multi-factor questions rather than a single proven collapse story.
A ship burial, object style, rune, place-name, language inference, or later narrative cannot by itself establish ethnicity, biological origin, a fixed territorial population, or one Viking identity.
