Chapter I

The Story of Northern Europe

When the glaciers retreated from Northern Europe, the first humans followed, venturing into a vast, ice-carved landscape of fjords, forests, and open sea.

The Maglemosian hunter-gatherers were among the first to inhabit Scandinavia, approximately 12,000 years ago. They fished the Baltic, hunted aurochs across the tundra, and left their mark on the landscape with the oldest boat graves in the world. Then came the Funnel Beaker farmers, who brought agriculture northward and built the great passage graves that still stand in Denmark and Sweden.

The Nordic Bronze Age brought an era of sun worship, long-distance trade, and masterful metalwork. Rock carvings from Bohuslan to Bornholm show ships, solar symbols, and warriors in a world connected from the Baltic to the British Isles. The Iron Age transformed these communities into the Germanic tribes that Rome called the Germani, ancestors of the Norse, the Goths, the Saxons, and the Franks.

Then came the age the world remembers. Viking longships carried warriors and traders from Newfoundland to Constantinople, from Dublin to Novgorod. The Hanseatic League that followed built a trading empire that shaped the medieval world. Their DNA endures in the people of Scandinavia, Northern Germany, the British Isles, and beyond.

"The runes are carved. The sagas are written. The blood remembers."
