The Rouran Khaganate was a powerful steppe empire in North Asia during the late fourth to the middle sixth century CE, but few human remains have been found. Here we present genomic data from a Rouran noble's tomb dating to the early fifth century CE, representing the first genetic evidence of the Rouran.
