Last bastion is thawing: The ice of East Antarctica was previously considered relatively stable, but this is increasingly changing. Climate change is shifting the Antarctic circumpolar ring current southwards and thus transporting warmer water onto the East Antarctic continental shelf. As a result, the ocean there has already warmed by up to two degrees in places, which promotes glacier melting. This southward shift of the circulation is expected to continue for decades, regardless of emissions reductions.
